Dr. Winkler (Mari) joined the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department faculty at the University of Washington in May, 2015. During her scientific career she studied at the University Duisburg Essen (DE) (Chemistry Department), at University of British Columbia (CA) (Microbiology and Immunology Department), at Columbia University (Earth and Environmental Engineering Department), and at the University of New South Wales (AU) in the Marine-Microbiology Department. She received her PhD from the Environmental Biotechnology Department at Delft University of Technology (NL) and wrote two dissertations1; one in the field of microbial ecology and one in environmental engineering. Besides academic research, her professional curriculum includes industrial experience in the water and wastewater sector. After she completed her dissertation she started working in the industry at GMB, where she was part of a team who designed wastewater treatment plans. In 2013 she received Europe’s most prestigious Marie Curie fellowship to conduct a Post Doc in the field of mathematical modeling at Ghent University, Belgium.
